Distance covered – 96.6 Km. Total distance covered – 479.6km. [But…Donny keeps claiming he has covered 515km on account of riding from Hook of Holland to Rotterdam. I then remembered my 30+ Km in Amsterdam so we’ve decided we’re even].

We finally managed to nail an early start. After a pleasant stay and a very good host at the Hotel Bergischer Hof in Konigswinter we were rolling by 10.30am. Navigation was expected to be easy with a route following the river all the way to St Goar. The scenery started to improve at around the 25km mark. The factories and shipping containers started to fade out, replaced with baronial looking homes in the hills, and picturesque little riverside towns. What did not improve was the growing discomfort from my left rear posterior. A wardrobe adjustment and some anti-chafing cream seemed to ease what could have been a disaster.

With the sun shining we stopped around 2pm [and a fairly poor 35km distance covered] for a nap in the sun. The slow pace was at least partly own to bumpier than perfect surfaces. We picked up the pace after lunch and after around 12km detected the aroma of brewing. That would be beer rather than coffee. That demanded a stop in the brewery beer garden for a local brew and a sausage. That was more than enough to power us down river with 32km to pedal to see us to our hotel just outside St Goar.

What’s been missing from this trip is anything more than a passing hello or nod to fellow cyclists. What has been very noticeable on this route is the large numbers of retiree cyclists. it seems to be the done thing to get together with a spouse or small group and go cycle touring after collecting your pension. Not long after the brewery stop we were passed by an elderly gent doing a brisk pace on a mountain bike. His shirt said “Blackpool Cycle Team”. I was failing to catch him until a narrowed section of the path forced him to get off the bike. I caught up and asked if he had cycled from Blackpool. He answered in broad Dutch and explained that Blackpool was a place in the Netherlands. He was 70 and out for a 90km run including a trip back up the hill to his caravan park. He pulled us along the next 20km at the fastest pace we’d ridden all week. Calves like steel and two hip replacements. We bid him farewell as Google Maps directed us off the path to our hotel for the night. Just under the 100km and we’d finished before 7pm. Still on track.
