Distance today. 110.6km. Total distance. Approx 620km.

Interesting day today. Indeed, a hard day. Not just because it was the biggest mileage, but mainly because of a tactical change to try and create a shortcut mid-way through the day. I had picked Worms as a destination due to it it having an interesting name and because it was close to 100km from our start point in pretty St Goar. The plan was to follow the Rhine route for about 35km then cut off a corner of the Rhine and take a more direct bearing towards Worms. It was a slowish start to the day. I needed a morning nap post breakfast, then got out the spoke key to tighten a few spokes loosend by repeatedly bumping over less than perfect terrain. We rolled for 8km into Oberwesel and found a bakery to pick up lunch for later. That included a tasty sounding Lime and Elderflower drink that was popped into a pannier for later. We left Oberwesel and headed in the direction of Mainz, passing Bacharach on the route. Bingen was selected as the lunch stop at just over 35km. “You need to hydrate” says Donny passing me the Lime and Elderflower drink. Mid-way through the hydration I decided to read the tin. 6.9% alcohol. Not what was intended but I’d started so I had to finish.

Post-lunch was when things started to go slightly awry. Obviously we had no idea what the terrain would be like as we chopped off a section of Rhine to make a more direct course. Google Maps said it would be 65km. It was. What it didn’t tell us was that there were some nasty uphill sections on the way, and mile after mile of fields, barely passable farm tracks, and rock-strewn trails through orchards. Pretty it may be, easy pedaling it certainly wasn’t. My compatriot didn’t seem to find it as amusing as me for some reason. Not sure why.

Mile after mile of orchard, vineyard, and fields made for an interesting, but slow ride. We eventually decided to ignore Maps, and jumped onto the tarmac for a fast last 20km to Worms. Ugly name but nice little town. Great food in town completed what must have been a much needed massive calorie intake. Super tired to end the week but no time for a rest day quite yet.
