A splendid rest day was at yesterday involving 7 hours in the Badeparadies Schwarzwald at Titisee. If you’re ever in the area, whether having cycled for 10 days or otherwise, this is a great place to visit. It’s 3 water/wellness experiences in something a bit like a giant greenhouse. It has a water park in one side, a huge lagoon pool surounded by palm trees in the middle, and a wellness area with multiple types of sauna and relaxation areas in the other side. The main pool has both indoor and outdoor areas, with lots of bubbly water bits, a swim up bar with some very tasty frozen cocktails, and all kept at a very nice 33c. We liked it so much we stayed for 7 hours. Do note that the wellness area is typically German. i.e. get your kit off and be prepared to wander around naked. This area had a pool bar where Donny claims it’s the only time he’s been in a bar drinking beer while naked. Anyway, wonderful place and there could be no better way to rest tired cyclist bodies.

On Day 11 we set off bright and early at just before 10am. We spent 10.5 hours in the saddle, completed 125km, and found a guest house in the middle of nowhere just as the darkness started to descend on the forest. A big day which gets us back on track, still with a glimmer hope of reaching Budapest in 9 days time. No major dramas today. We had covered 80km by around 5pm, and put in a push to get us to the day’s target of Beuron. This turned out to be an odd little place on the banks of the Danube. we can’t quite put our finger on why it was odd, but we were pleased to get out of there as we felt we may have been at risk of being abducted into a religious cult had we stayed longer. This was the 100km point for the day and my calorie and fluid intake had not been as meticulously planned as it should be. I encountered the dreaded bonk at around 94km so it was imperative to be fed and watered before taking to the saddle one again.

The only place in the village that seemed to be open had a menu with 2 items – we opted for the steak and potato dish which turned out to be perfectly acceptable. Spurred on by the Danube running beside us, we made haste throught the forest to try and cover the addtional 29km to Sigmaringen. Darkness and icy cold were starting to set in as we sped past tiny hamlets, fields full of cows, and occasional riverside camp sites. Just as Donny suggested it was time for lights on, we spotted a mill with what looked like a small hotel and restaurant attached. It was 8km from the destination so we decided enough was enough for one day, and booked a room before going through the usual evening routine, and heading to the bar for yet another variety of German beer. If we’re to make the final destination it’s going to need to be 3-4 days of plus 100km stages.
