What it was like to ride

Marcus’s notes

We covered 80km on the road today as we left Austria and entered Slovakia. That’s 1805km total distance so far and takes us ever closer to Budapest. Bit of a late start from Vienna after the very late arrival from the day before. It took a while to navigate back to the river on the way out of the city. Once we were on the right path we faced a very nasty headwind to slow early progress to a crawl. It was warm and sunny despite the annoying breeze. About 15km along the path the signage became a little ambiguous. I went straight on down a short hill and became distracted by a naked man standing just to the left of the path. As I looked to the right, I could see quite a crowd of other naked people either milling around or lying in the sun. A number were wandering along the path seemingly quite content to share it with oncoming cyclists.

We probably covered about 4 – 5km of nakedness before coming to a bridge. As we crossed the bridge a very naked man called to me. Being friendly and well-mannered I stopped. He then asked in, what I assume to be German, if I was going to Bratislava. Ja, I said. He then pointed in the opposite direction and said something about 3km along the other side of the river in the opposite direction from which we had come. At that point I twigged that perhaps we had missed a turn and that the nudist colony was perhaps adding some unwanted km to the route. No real harm done as we got back into the headwind and continued back on EV6. We stopped at around 30km for a refreshment at a cyclist’s bar/rest and refilled the water bottles. The next 25km was a bit dull as we followed the line of a forest with no change in scenery and continued windy conditions. As we got closer to Slovakia the scenery opened up and became more agricultural again.

We passed an abandoned customs point as we left Austria and entered Slovakia. 10km later we were in the heart of historic Bratislava and stopped for a beer before mapping another 3km to the Doubletree. Beer at 1.60 Eur for 2 was a pleasant surprise after the rather larger bill we had just settled from the brief stay at the Vienna Hilton.

Day 18 should see us track the Danube but staying in Slovakia. Aiming for 100km or so.

Starting in Vienna's Innere Stadt, the route heads northeast through Leopoldstadt, Kaisermühlen, Stadlau, and Aspern up to Groß-Enzersdorf by 16.5 km. The path continues through several smaller settlements including Oberhausen, Wittau, and Franzensdorf before reaching Haringsee at 35.6 km. The route is mostly paved (93%), with a small section of gravel or unpaved surfaces (3%) and some unmapped parts (4%). It runs on a mix of cycle paths (19.1 km), minor roads (12.9 km), and quiet streets (11.6 km), also including main roads (9.5 km) and paths or tracks.

From Loimersdorf at 41.5 km to Bad Deutsch-Altenburg at 50.1 km, there is the longest stretch without café, shop, or water lasting 9.2 km. The route crosses into Slovakia near Wolfsthal about 58.6 km and continues past Bratislava's Old Town, finishing at 68.9 km in Bratislava city center. The elevation is mostly flat with a small 2% climbing and descending, highest point at 191 m at the start in Vienna and lowest at 137 m near the end.
