The ride in Begur

Cycling guide to Begur

Begur sits at the centre of a compact network of roads on the Catalan coast, and the riding from here is built around loops rather than long point-to-point days. The single route on file, the Begur – Pals – Llafranc – Tamariu loop, covers 42.9 km with 562 m of climbing, enough to take in the inland villages and the coastal settlements in one outing. Heading out, the loop reaches Pals, then Torrentí, Torrent and la Barceloneta before turning towards Llofriu and Palafrugell, the largest place on the circuit. From there it passes Esclanyà and drops to the coast at Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc, then works back through Fornells to Begur. The return side of the loop takes in Puigcalent, l'Arrabassada, Regencós, el Mas Tomasi and sa Riera. The main climb of the day, 4 km at 4.3%, comes at 26.8 km and tops out at 221 m, the high point of the route.

Best time to ride
The recorded riding here is in July, with temperatures around 28°C, so early starts make sense in high summer; spring and autumn would be cooler on the same roads.
Terrain
The terrain is rolling rather than mountainous: 562 m of gain spread over 42.9 km, with no sustained height gained. The one substantial climb averages 4.3% over 4 km and reaches 7.3% at its steepest, cresting at 221 m, which is also the highest point on the loop.
