The ride in Pals
Cycling guide to Pals
Pals sits at the centre of a compact network of village-to-village roads in the Baix Empordà, and the riding on offer here is about linking small settlements rather than chasing altitude. The 43.6 km loop from the town runs west through Sant Feliu de Boada, Fontclara, Sant Julià de Boada, Palau-sator and Peratallada, then on by Canapost, Vulpellac and Fonteta to Cruïlles, a stretch that mixes surfaced roads with gravel sections. Beyond Cruïlles the route reaches its furthest point around Mas Savalls, Sant Sadurní de l'Heura, Banyeres and el Rissec before turning back through Sant Miquel de Cruïlles, Veïnat de Sant Joan, el Pou de Glaç, Can Salva, Rabioses and Sant Joan de Salelles. The return leg passes la Bisbal d'Empordà, la Barceloneta, Torrent and Torrentí on the way back to Pals. Total climbing is 261 m, so the loop is well within reach of most riders.
- The loop is recorded in July, with temperatures around 32°C, so early starts make sense in high summer; spring and autumn bring cooler air for the same roads.
- The terrain is flat to gently rolling: 261 m of ascent spread over 43.6 km, with no single sustained climb and a high point of only 110 m.
